Like epoch, "era" in English it originally meant "the starting point of an age;" the meaning "system of chronological notation" is c.1646; that of "historical period" is 1741.
In chronology, an era is the highest level for the organization of the measurement of time. A calendar era span of many years which are numbered beginning at a specific epoch, which often marks the origin of a state or cosmology, the birth of a leader, or another significant historical or mythological event; it can be called after either accordingly.

Hippolyte Bouchard attacks San Juan Capistrano Mission - The privateers of the magazine No Quarter Given annually commemorate the attack on Mision San Juan Capistrano. Interesting pictures on this page, notice that the only casualty at the 1998 event was one of the raiders.

Presidio La Bahia - Living History Program - Presidio La Bahia's Living History Program was developed to provide the public with an accurate reenactment of the massacre of Colonel Fannin and his men. The reenactors wear the uniforms and clothing of the time period, 1836. This extensive site has photographs from the last three years of the event.
Primer Batallon de Mexico - This site is the support site for a group of living historians who replicate the Mexican military experience of the first half of 19th Century, primarily during the Texas Revolution. Rancho Camulos Museum - The Rancho Camulos Museum is located on the site of the rancho founded in 1859, which was originally part of the Rancho San Francisco. This also known as the 'Home of Ramona' (The novel 'Ramona' is about the Rancho period) and is Ventura County (CA)'s first National Historic Landmark.
