Color or colour (see spelling differences) is a property of light that is determined by its wavelength (or by its composition as a blend of several wavelengths). The range of visible wavelengths of light is known as the visible spectrum, or simply the spectrum.
The term color may also refer to a property of objects or materials, determined by which wavelengths of light they reflect, transmit, or emit. Typically only features of the composition of light that are detectable by humans are included, so color may also be considered a psychological phenomenon. Regimenting these various uses of the term is a major task in current philosophy.
Since perception of color stems from the varying sensitivity of different types of cone cells in the retina to different parts of the spectrum, colors may be defined by the degree to which they stimulate these cells. The physiology of color is discussed below.
