A metre (American spelling: meter; symbol: m) is a unit of length and the current base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). The metre is part of a metric system. The metre is defined as equal to the length of the path travelled by light in absolute vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second. Historically, the metre was intended to be, and is very nearly, the ten-millionth part of the distance from the equator to the north pole. A corresponding unit of area is the square metre and a corresponding unit of volume is the cubic metre.
Multiples and subdivisions of the metre, such as kilometre (1000 metres) and centimetre (1/100 metres), are indicated by adding SI prefixes to metre.
