Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) has been a key actor on the development of the Scouts of the World Award during the past years. This international programme was presented recently to the staff in KISC as part of the opportunities that young people have to create a better world. The Scouts of the World Award is an international initiative that has been launched in order to encourage a stronger involvement of young adults in the development of society by giving them the skills and opportunities to face the challenges and problems in the world. It concerns global citizenship-preparation for young adults and emphasises three core-themes demanding understanding, skills and knowledge, for life on a small planet: Peace, Environment, and Development.

The very first Scouts of the World Discovery in Hong Kong took place in June 2009, with Rover Scouts from all across Hong Kong willing to face our common global challenges in the field of sustainable development.

For young people living in big cities, urban poverty, food and equal opportunity among races, which are common topics of TV current affairs programme, seem to be clichés and may be no longer appealing to them. The first Scouts of the World Discovery held in June 2009 was an attempt to motivate youth members to discover issues of global development and take active steps in initiating plans of resolving such issues either on local or global basis.

International Youth Day - Scouting builds sustainability through education

Geneva, World Scout Bureau, 11 August 2009 – Every year, The United Nations celebrates the International Youth Day on the 12 of August. In 2009, the message of the intergovernmental organization is “Sustainability, our challenge, our future”. Three aspects of life are addressed by this essential question for the future of our planet and of humanity: the environment, society, and the economy.

World Scouting, Economical and Social Council member of the United Nations since 1947, brings answers based on its mission which is “to educate young people to play an active role in society”. True to the vision of its founder, the Scout Movement imagines that no human development is possible without individuals who are engaged and take responsibility in provoking it.

The world is being threatened by climate change and Scouts have the opportunity to have their actions recognised and their voices heard amongst the world's leaders on this important issue. In December 2009, The United Nations will hold a Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark where world leaders will decide what future we would like to see for our shared planet. In light of the current international focus on climate change and environmental awareness, the World Organization of the Scout Movement reaffirms its commitment to the environment and tackling climate change by urging Scouts around the world to demonstrate their leadership capabilities and take action.

Several co-operative partnerships have been established between WOSM and other organisations that have committed themselves to tackling the climate change challenge. Scouts have many opportunities to show their concern for the environment and to share what action they are taking on the climate change challenge, which can be seen by the local community and international community. We urge Scouts worldwide to engage in the following campaigns, visit the websites and participate in vocalising our pledge in our mission of “Creating a Better World”.
